Central Florida's Jones Nets Potential Program-Changer
Central Florida coach Donnie Jones may be going through a rough stretch these days on the court, but he’s celebrating off the court.
``Program changer.”
That’s how Florida Rams’ Matt Ramker described athletic 6-foot-4 guard Shawn Smith, who committed to the Knights on Monday.
One well-respected recruiting analyst said he’d be ranked in the Top 50 in the Class of 2012. Another said he’d be in their Top 100.
``The rankings don’t really matter to me,” Smith told me.
Smith said he’s more of a shooting guard, but that Jones told him he’d get the opportunity to play both backcourt spots at UCF.
Smith had offers from Florida, Florida State, West Virginia, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Cincinnati.
``It’s about Coach Jones,” Smith said of why he chose Central Florida. ``He really stood out. Even though their were bigger names, he has a plan.”
Smith recently transferred from Arlington Country Day in Jacksonville, Fla.. where he was averaging 21 points and six assists, to nearby Providence – where he’ll team with fellow UCF commit Wayne Martin.
And Smith wasted no time trying to get a big man to help. He called 6-foot-9 Dwyer High Joell James to let him know he had committed to Central Florida.
``He’s thinking about committing to UCF,” Smith said. ``I told him I was a Knight and he said he’s leaning towards it, also.”
