George Mason coach Jim Larranga has agreed in principle to a deal with Miami to become its next men’s basketball coach.

Larranaga, 61, who led the Patriots to an improbable Final Four back in 2006, emerged as the leading candidate after Harvard’s Tommy Amaker spurned interest from the school earlier in the month.

CBSSports.com first reported interest between Miami and Larannaga on Wednesday and the New York Post later reported that Larranaga will be the next Hurricanes coach.

Multiple sources told FOXSports.com that a deal was consummated Friday morning and Larranaga is en route back to inform his team.

Larranaga, who is 273-164 at George Mason and has gone to five NCAA tournaments, would replace Frank Haith – who left for Missouri – if he gets the job.

Larranaga was pursued three years ago by his alma mater, Providence, but opted to remain at George Mason.

The Patriots were 25-5 this past season, lost to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament and are considered the favorite to win the CAA next year.

This is an interesting choice by new Miami athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who came over as a senior associate athletic director at Wisconsin and previously interviewed Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter thus far in the process.
