Extra Point: Why Bama's Mark Sears was Left Off Award Lists

Despite being one of the nation's top scorers and leading his team to the top of the conference through the midway point of the season, Alabama's Mark Sears missed out on being named to the watch list for the Bob Cousey Award, given each year to the country's top point guard.

Sears, a former Ohio Bobcat who transferred to the Alabama in 2022, leads the Tide in scoring with over twenty points per game. The senior also leads the team in steals with 1.7 and is tied for the lead in assists with 4.0 per game.

He is a top-30 scorer in the nation, and has been one of the SEC's most consistent players this season, so to not even be mentioned as one of the top point guards in the country is puzzling.

Featured on the list, in place of Sears, are players such as Creighton's Steven Ashworth who averages 9.2 points per game and 3.8 assists, and Kentucky's D.J. Wagner who, similarly to Ashworth, has worse numbers than Sears this season.

The Florence native has helped lead the Crimson Tide to a 7-1 start in SEC play and has scored less than twenty in a conference matchup just once so far.

The Tide takes on Mississippi State next with a chance to tighten its grip on the SEC as the regular season winds down.
