Kentucky Wildcats: Intimidating Big Man Makes Strong Declaration on Future Amid Mark Pope’s Lexington Arrival
Sam Upshaw Jr./Courier Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Another Kentucky Wildcats big man is leaving the program, with Ugonna Onyenso declaring that he’s ready to turn pro by way of the 2024 NBA Draft. The option to return to Lexington — or college in general — is still there for Onyenso but it doesn’t sound like it’s part of his plan. It’s all about the NBA right now for the 19-year-old Nigerian.

Via Jonathan Givony of ESPN:

“I’m ready to go to the next level,” Onyenso said. “I’m not thinking about coming back to play college basketball. I’m 100% focused on the NBA.”

Standing seven-foot tall and with a wingspan the height of Victor Wembanyama to go with a nearly 250-pound frame, Onyenso said that he is also looking to impress NBA teams with his offensive abilities.

“I want the NBA to know that I am a big that can shoot the ball,” Onyenso said. “I am not just a defensive player. It’s not only about blocking shots with me. I did what I needed to do to help the team, but I don’t think anyone saw what I am capable of doing. I am excited to show people that . My ability to shoot, put the ball on the floor and create for myself. My goal is to get better these next couple of months, and be confident in everything I need to do in this process.”

Onyenso averaged just 3.2 points per game in the two seasons he played with Kentucky. His main role for the team was mostly focused on the other side of the floor, as he grabbed 2.4 defensive rebounds per outing and swatted away 2.1 blocks per contest in just 14.0 minutes a night.

Since he did not play heavy minutes for the Wildcats, Onyenso will likely have to do better in the combine and any offseason workouts in front of scouts to boost his NBA Draft stock.
