Martin, 56, coached at Kansas State for five seasons from 2007 to 2012. He then was hired by South Carolina, where he spent 10 seasons. He made the Final Four in 2016-17, which was his fifth season on the job. But that was his only NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 seasons at South Carolina, and just one of two 20-win seasons he had with the Gamecocks.
Although South Carolina did not perform as it hoped, Martin is still recognized as an accomplished coach, which explains UMass’ interest in him. UMass is looking or a new coach after firing Matt McCall.
