Ed Orgeron: No chance of joining Nick Saban's Alabama staff
Ed Orgeron Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Ed Orgeron has made numerous stops during his coaching career, but there is one job he says he won’t be taking.

Orgeron coached LSU from 2016-2021. He took over on an interim basis in 2016 and then kept the job thereafter, culminating in a 15-0 season and national championship in 2019. Incredibly, putting together arguably the greatest season ever in college football wasn’t enough for LSU, which fired him a season-and-a-half later.

Though Orgeron would like to coach again, he says it will never be on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama.

Orgeron was on WGNO radio in New Orleans. A fan called in and told Orgeron about a big fear that Coach O one day would become Saban’s defensive coordinator and recruit against LSU.

“It will never happen. Never happen,” Orgeron said. “That will never happen with Ed Orgeron. I promise you.”

Many accomplished coaches who were down on their luck ended up taking jobs on Saban’s staff. Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, Doug Marrone and Bill O’Brien are among the coaches who have done so.

Orgeron on Saban’s staff would certainly help his image, but Coach O says he wouldn’t do it. It would be hard to go work for a guy who you took on and beat on the field, and cursed about.
