Memphis Football: Seth Henigan Talks His Record Breaking Season, Liberty Bowl Performance

On Friday night, the Memphis Tigers ended the AAC's Bowl Season schedule with an emphatic 36-26 win over Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Powering the victory that brought Memphis to ten wins on the season was a phenomenal day from junior quarterback Seth Henigan. 

Henigan was named the game's MVP, completing 24-of-34 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns. The Denton, Texas native also rushed for 27 yards and another a touchdown. That performance broke the Tigers' single-season completions record (317) and single-season attempts record (475). His passing yardage total for his career came to 10,773, passing Memphis great Brady White to become the all-time leading passer in program history. His 2023 passing yardage total of 3,880 is also the third-highest total for a single season in Memphis history.

Following the win, Henigan was quick to say his main priority was a victory, especially one over a Power Five opponent.

"It means a lot, but obviously the goal was to win the game," Henigan said when asked about his new place in the Memphis record book. "That kind of came as an add-on, an additional accolade. Obviously it's a really cool record to have, but it's impossible without all the teammates and the people who have helped me."

Included in Henigan's praise from the microphone after the game, along with his receivers, was his offensive line, playing shorthanded in the postseason battle. The Tigers gave up zero sacks in the win.

"You look at our team today and we had two backup offensive linemen who stepped up in a big way for us after two of our starters entered the portal," Henigan noted. "They played a heck of a game...We dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball." 

The Tigers have now achieved their fourth ten-win season since 2014. Henigan will enter his senior season and his fourth with the Tigers in 2024, alongside most of Memphis' key offensive contributors.
