Memphis Tigers Navy Score was Memphis 37, Navy 13.

Today at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD,  the Memphis Tigers faced Navy. Behind a tremendous passing game by Seth Henigan, throwing to 8 different receivers, Memphis won.

Memphis jumped out to a quick lead on a quick drive.  Navy early in the game had some success running, and it was a balanced game for the first half.  At the end of the first half Seth Henigan was 15-22 for 205 yards.  He looked pretty efficient in the last drive of the half, but the Tigers ran out of time, and a 37-yard field goal finished the scoring for a 13-7 lead.

The second half began with a stronger Tiger defense. Despite 18 carries, Navy QB Tai Levatai could never break free, ending with 37 yards.  Navy was on another long, seemingly inevitable drive when the Tiger defense stepped up. Quindell Johnson with the excellent coverage and the one-handed interception halfway through the second half changed the game.  After several strong running plays the Midshipmen of Navy decided to take a shot deep and Quindell Johnson made them regret it.

Memphis made them pay, and it seemed once Memphis had a little bit of breathing room the Tigers had another gear.  The opportunistic defense struck again. In the second half Quindell Johnson made a difference again, knocking the ball from the Navy RB Anton Hall Jr.  loose and it was recovered by Memphis deep in their own territory.

Memphis put the hammer down late

Joseph Scates got behind the Navy defense and Seth Henigan hit him in stride.  A 79-yard strike (one of the more beautiful deep balls you’ll ever see) to put Memphis up 20-7 early in the 3rd quarter.  Mind you, the Memphis Tiger’s first offensive play of the second half.

It was Scates only catch of the day, and you’d be challenged to find a better yard per catch average than 79.0.  Scates surprised with his speed, but RB Asa Martin reminds us of some of his last year’s flashes of promise, including a touchdown run.

Though offense and the late add-on touchdowns made it look like a rout, the defense was an essential part of the victory.  Quindell Johnson was even more dominant than advertised. He had an Interception this week after one last week.

Game plan after halftime opened up. And Henigan benefitted from that. But he looked confident in the pocket all day, once again with no turnovers and no obvious passes into danger.  Henigan finished with 24 completions on 34 attempts for 415 yards

Henigan’s passing was distributed evenly, to 8 receivers, including WR Gabriel Rogers five catches for 95 yards, and WR Javon Ivory with seven catches for 89 yards.  Touchdown catches were by Scates and Prieskorn. The kicker Chris Howard converted his every opportunity, going 3 for 3. Success from every sector of the team is what characterized this victory.
