Takeaways from Memphis Tigers game

1st Takeaway is that Seth Henigan is pretty darn good.  It’s a family column so I’ll go with that.  Takeaways from the Memphis Tigers game always should mention Seth Henigan.  There are other programs with good quarterbacks. For example, there are a couple of other programs that have 0 interceptions. Their names are Ohio State, Georgia, and USC, you might have heard of them.  So, yeah, Memphis is feeling pretty good about this position right now.

So for the second week in a row Seth Henigan is on the AAC Honor Roll.  He’s passed for over 700 yards these two games.  It makes you wonder what in the world he has to do to gain the honor of Offensive player of the week.  Stay tuned to see if the conspiracy deepens.

2nd Takeaway  The Memphis Tigers defense has difficulty getting off the field.  Right now they rank 128 of 129 for third-down efficiency.  That’s pretty bad, but the eye test tells you that.  Each of the three teams Memphis has played has great offensive numbers.  But is that because Memphis has played good offenses or that those offenses looked good against Memphis.

Takeaways from Memphis Tigers Game

3rd Takeaway Now for the more nuanced takeaways.  The rush offense is starting to come around.  Establishing the run finally started paying off in the third quarter, and three different running backs produced.  Jevyon Ducker led the team, but Brandon Thomas was strong and Asa Martin contributed again. But after 200 plus yards passing in the first half, the Memphis Tigers threw 4 times in the 3rd quarter.  Is it worth that to establish a run game?  Obviously the coaches feel so and it started to show up late in the game.

4th  Takeaway  The offensive line is giving up too many Tackles for Losses and quarterback sacks. And  it’s become an issue so far in non-conference games.  Let’s see if they can get it cleared up for the upcoming conference schedule.
