Tennessee Vols have their eye on a potential two-way player in the 2026 recruiting class
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Vols currently have a potential two-way player on their roster in true freshman defensive back Boo Carter.

Carter, who is also in the mix to return kicks/punts for the Vols, will primarily be a safety for Tennessee, but he has the potential to contribute on the offensive side of the ball, too.

The Chattanooga native is dynamic with the ball in his hands. At some point, the Vols could figure out a way to get the ball in Carter's hands on offense.

Tennessee must like the idea of a two-way player because they have their eyes on another potential two-way player in the 2026 recruiting class.

The Vols are pursuing 2026 four-star wide receiver Dyzier Carter. And according to Rivals.com national recruiting director Adam Gorney, Tennessee's coaching staff recently asked Carter if he prefers wide receiver or defensive back because he could play both positions with the Vols.

From Rivals.com: The four-star receiver from Woodberry Forest (Va.) Woodberry Forest School loved the fan support at Tennessee this past weekend and also really liked how much the offense was passing the ball but an interesting question from the coaching staff caught his attention. They asked Carter if he preferred receiver or defensive back because he could also play there for the Vols so now he could consider going both ways.

Carter, 6-foot/180 lbs from Woodberry Forest, VA, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 4 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Virginia. He's also rated as the No. 23 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class (Carter could end up being a five-star recruit).

I think the biggest takeaway here is that Tennessee is targeting elite athletes who can essentially play anywhere on the field. The more of those guys you have, the better chance you have for success in the SEC.

Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Rutgers are also in the mix for Carter, though more teams will likely join the battle over the next year.
