Texas A&M receives troubling update on quarterback's health

It's Max Johnson's time in College Station.

The Aggies received a disappointing update on the health of quarterback Conner Weigman, who left Week 4's game against Auburn with a lower leg injury.

Initially expected to be a week-to-week injury, further testing revealed more damage, with reports suggesting he needs months to recover, ending his season. (h/t On3.com)

Weigman looked confident under offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. Last season, Weigman appeared in five games as a freshman and was 73-of-132 (55.3 percent) for 896 yards (6.8 yards per attempt) with eight touchdowns. In four games this year, he is 82-of-119 (68.9 percent) for 979 yards (8.2 yards per attempt) with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He's added 12 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The bleak outlook for his return from injury is an unfortunate break for a quarterback hitting his stride. Fortunately, he's young enough as a sophomore to bounce back strong in 2024.

Johnson, the son of Super Bowl XXXVII-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, is in his senior season and second with the Aggies after two years at LSU.

He filled in for Weigman against Auburn and was stellar, finishing 7-of-11 for 123 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-10 win. On his best throw, Johnson connected with wide receiver Evan Stewart on a 37-yard touchdown pass that he dropped between two defenders.

Texas A&M (3-1) plays Arkansas (2-2) in the Southwest Classic in Week 5. Johnson started last year's game and was 11-of-21 for 151 yards and one touchdown while adding 42 yards on the ground in a 23-21 Aggies win.
