Urban Meyer Says Kyle McCord Entering Portal 'Made No Sense'

McCord didn't exactly put up Heisman-worthy numbers, but was still one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten. He finished the season 229 of 348 passing for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and six picks.

His play this season made many feel that he had earned the right to be the starter again next year, but the decision to transfer tells another story.

Meyer was impressed by McCord and gave him the benefit of the doubt despite tossing two crucial interceptions in the loss to Michigan, but remains confused by his decision to leave.

"I mean they beat Notre Dame as a first-time starter, three new offensive linemen," Meyer said. " ... He threw two interceptions in the Wolverine game that weren’t his fault ... I’m trying to make it compute, because I want to be empathetic and I want to say, ‘Ok, I understand.’ There’s no place better for Kyle than Ohio State. That place does not exist, unless he’s being guaranteed a starting spot."

Rumors, predictions and betting lines have been connecting McCord to programs like Nebraska and Miami, though no official decision has been announced.

Regardless of where he ends up, McCord will likely be the full-time starter.

Still, Meyer will maintain his confusion.

“If he goes to a better place than Ohio State, I’ll be the first one to say he went to a better place. I just don’t know," he said.

No. 7 Ohio State will take on No. 9 Missouri in the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas on Friday, Dec. 29.
