Emily Blunt had to redo her 'The Devil Wears Prada' audition, and here's why

The Devil Wears Prada will celebrate its 15th anniversary on June 30, and everything has changed for Emily Blunt in the time since.

But the 38-year-old actress, it turns out, wasn't intending to audition for the fashion-forward film—and so, she showed up looking like Andy Sachs.

"I remember being in L.A. for pilot season or something terrifying like that," Blunt told James Corden for Thursday night's Late Late Show. "And I went and met with Fox Studios, and I was reading for this other project. They randomly said, 'Oh, you want to read, we have this 'Devil Wears Prada movie—you want to read for this movie?'" I was like, 'Yeah, sure.'"

Blunt continued: "But I was rushing for the airport, and I remember just being kind of flustered, so I read it. But I was wearing, like, sweatpants. And I did not look the part at all. And then I remember being in a dingy London nightclub, and I got a call from the director. He was like, 'We need you to do it again, but can you, like, not wear sweatpants?'"

Blunt then described her utter disbelief that she landed the part and continued nerves at the first table read with Meryl Streep, though "she was wonderful."

The Devil Wears Prada followed Andy (Anne Hathaway) as fresh graduate with ambitious journalistic dreams. She somehow lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), editor-in-chief at high-brow fashion magazine Runway, despite not caring or knowing anything about fashion. Blunt's character, also named Emily, is Miranda's first assistant and lives and breathes fashion.

Fast-forward to the present, and Blunt's A Quiet Place: Part II  is finally in theaters (today) after its original March 2020 release date was delayed time and time again due to the pandemic. Blunt co-stars with her husband, John Krasinski, who also directed and wrote both Quiet Place thrillers.
