George Clooney jokes his wife watching 'ER' reruns has been 'disastrous'

ER is available to stream on Hulu, but Amal Clooney already knew that.

"My wife has been watching [ER]," George Clooney said around the 20-minute mark of Stars in the House's two-hour-long virtual cast reunion Earth Day special to support his former co-star Gloria Reuben and her Waterkeeper Alliance. "This has been a very, very disastrous thing for me because I forgot all the terrible things I did as Dr. Ross.

Hosts James and Seth Rudetsky pointed out that Doug Ross was "a player," which led the two-time Oscar winner to jokingly add: "My wife keeps going, 'Is that it? Are you done? In Season 3, do you finally settle down with Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies)?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I think so.' And it's like, no. It's been a disaster for my marriage."

Later in the special, Clooney and Margulies—whose characters did eventually end up together in bliss—downplayed any hypothetical possibility of an ER reboot.

"The hardest part is that when you look at the show and consistently over so many years—it would be hard to say that you could do it at the level that we did it," Clooney said. "I'm not sure that's available. ... It's hard to catch lightning again."

"You can't capture lightning in a bottle twice," Margulies said. "I think you have to leave what was so beautiful and move on because it just feels cheap. ... It would cheapen it for me."

ER debuted in September 1994 and followed the rotating cast of doctors at Chicago's County General Hospital through 2009. Michael Crichton's series held the title as the longest-running primetime medical drama until Grey's Anatomy unseated it in 2019.

Diehard fans, like Amal apparently is now, can reminisce by watching the full reunion below.
