John Travolta discusses grieving for wife Kelly Preston: 'Mourning is something personal'

John Travolta lost his wife, Kelly Preston, last July after the 57-year-old actress fought breast cancer for two years.

The Oscar-nominated actor opened up about what the subsequent months have been like in an interview with Esquire Espana (translated from Spanish):

"I learned that mourning someone, mourning, is something personal. Mourning is individual and experiencing your own journey is what can lead to healing. This is different from someone else's journey. The most important thing you can do to help another when they are in mourning is to allow them to live it and not complicate it with yours.

"Let's say you lose someone and at the funeral you are very sad, another person approaches who is feeling sadder and then does not leave enough space for you to mourn. Otherwise, it will be two boats plummeting to the bottom. That is my experience. Because even when it's great to have company, sometimes it becomes like you're helping them, rather than putting yourself to work overcoming feelings of loss and mourning."

Travolta, 67, also celebrated what would have been his son Jett's 29th birthday earlier this month:

Jett, Travolta's eldest of three children with Preston, died during a family vacation to the Bahamas in January 2009. The then-16-year-old suffered a seizure and hit his head on the bathtub.

Travolta married Preston (real name Kelly Smith) in September 1991.
