Matt Damon coyly comments on potential Bennifer reunion: 'I hope it's true'

Matt Damon thought he was joining Today, but what he really did was hop into a time machine back to the early aughts.

The 50-year-old actor and filmmaker was asked about the red-hot rumor overtaking the internet that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are rekindling their romance, which originally involved a 2002 engagement and 2004 split.

"There is not enough liquor in the world for you to get me to say something about that," Damon told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, then added: "It's a fascinating story. I hope it's true. I love them both. I hope it's true. That would be awesome."

Damon separately joined Today with Hoda & Jenna, where "Bennifer" was again broached. The Oscar winner deflected by bringing up The Last Duel, which he wrote alongside Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, and noting that J-Lo—unlike Affleck—does not look any different than she looked 20 years ago:

E!'s Corinne Heller reported Monday that Affleck and Lopez spent last weekend vacationing alone together in Montana. (The Daily Mail published photos of the duo in the car and everything!)

From Heller:

"'They have been in touch here and there throughout the years,' a second source close to Jennifer told E! News, noting the duo reunited after she returned from filming in the Dominican Republic. 'Ben reached out to her to see how she was doing and they had dinner together a few times within this last month. It's natural between them and the chemistry is unreal. They picked up where they last left off and are enjoying each other's company right now.'"

This comes less than a month after Lopez and Alex Rodriguez publicly confirmed their split after roughly four years together, including a March 2019 engagement. According to another E! report Tuesday morning, an anonymous source revealed that A-Rod is "shocked" that his ex has seemingly already moved on because "he truly thought they would be able to make it work and reconnect."

As for Damon, his relationship with Affleck predates Lopez. The two Cambridge, Massachusetts, natives rose to prominence in tandem by co-writing and co-starring in Good Will Hunting (1997).

Damon is doing press to promote his dramatic thriller Stillwater, due July 30, and noted that his and Affleck's The Last Duel—directed by Ridley Scott—is set to arrive later this year. Watch the Stillwater trailer below.
