Meryl Streep was sold on Anne Hathaway for 'Devil Wears Prada' after watching 'Brokeback Mountain'

What's better than Miranda Priestly's closet?

Entertainment Weekly's oral history of June 2006's high-fashion comedic drama The Devil Wears Prada, in which Meryl Streep played editor-in-chief Priestly who gets an unexpected and unsuspecting assistant named Andy (Anne Hathaway).

"Meryl was eager to make the movie, and she said 'let me meet with [Hathaway],'" director David Frankel offered. "Brokeback Mountain was about to come out. Annie had a wonderful, small role in that. And Meryl watched that scene from the movie, she met with her and called up Tom Rothman at Fox and said, 'Yeah, this girl's great, and I think we'll work well together.'"

Hathaway added: "I patiently waited until it was my turn, and I got the call. It was the easiest yes in the world. I remember the moment I found out I got the part, I just ran screaming through my apartment. I had a bunch of friends over at the time, I just jumped up in the living room and screamed, 'I'm going to be in The Devil Wears Prada!'"

The film—there shouldn't need to be a spoiler alert here because it has been 15 years, and you should have watched Devil Wears Prada around 100 times by now, but spoiler alert—rounds out with Andy realizing she doesn't want to compromise herself at Miranda's every whim and instead going to work as a newspaper reporter, but the two women have formed an undeniable and unspoken bond.

Emily Blunt, who starred as Priestly's senior assistant with superior fashion sense to Andy, recently discussed her experience auditioning for Devil Wears Prada and how it changed her life (6-minute mark):

Good Morning America shared clips from the video version of EW's oral history, showing the cast and crew virtually reuniting. Watch below.
