Will Ferrell's 'Elf' costume sells for $300,000 in memorabilia auction

Buddy the Elf hated the commodification of Christmas, but he would probably be delighted for the person who now owns his costume.

The elf costume worn by Will Ferrell, who played Buddy in "Elf," went for around $300,000 to an anonymous bidder in a recent U.K.-based auction.

The iconic item was put up for auction by Prop Store Entertainment Memorabilia.

"The folks over at Prop Store are holding an auction for some of the most iconic film and TV props ever made, and the winning bid on the 'Elf' costume just came in at a whopping $296,702.66," TMZ relayed. "As we reported, the outfit Will wore in the movie was expected to fetch between $27,600 and $41,000."

For the cover of The Hollywood Reporter late last month, Ferrell discussed why he turned down the opportunity to do an "Elf" sequel that would have earned him $29 million.

"I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money. And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.'"

Elf originally hit theaters Nov. 7, 2003.
