Urban Meyer Compares QB Commit Will Howard to Ohio State Legend

Former Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer had some high praise for quarterback commit Will Howard.

On Saturday, Meyer said Howard’s style of play reminded him of another signal-caller, one whom he used to coach during his time with the Buckeyes  - J.T. Barrett.

“Yeah I love Will Howard,” Meyer said during a recent episode of Urban's Take with Tim May. “I’ve watched him closely. The No. 1 thing is he’s a winner and he’s tough. And those are two things you want. I think of a winner, though, I think of — guys like JT Barrett come to mind. Is he going to be the No. 1 pick, No. 2 pick? Probably not, in the NFL draft, but he wins and he’s tough. And that’s what I think of Will Howard.”

Barrett of course, leads the Buckeyes with the most passing (9,434) and total yards (12,697), as well as the most passing touchdowns (104) and total touchdowns (147), and the most wins as a QB in school history with a 38-6 record as a starter.

In other words, that is some pretty high praise from Meyer.

Howard announced his transfer to Ohio State from Kansas State on Thursday and has already bought into the culture of the Scarlet and Gray. Along with referring to Michigan as the “Team Up North,” Howard has raved about coach Ryan Day’s system and said it is a great fit for the way he plays the game.

"Talking to Coach Day about the scheme, I got excited," Howard said. "Kansas State is very pro-style and gets you ready for the pros better than most programs in the country. I didn't want to lose any of that momentum. When Coach Day and I met and went through the scheme... We hit it off in that way. I knew that was the system that would get me the most prepared for that level."

Howard is the favorite to become Ohio State’s next starting quarterback but will receive some serious competition from sophomore Devin Brown, freshman Lincoln Kienholz, and incoming freshman Air Noland over the offseason.
