Casey Schmitt got his call-up during 'Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3'

When asked where he was when he got the call during a postgame interview after his exciting debut, Schmitt answered, "Funny story. I was actually watching 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'"

After being chastised for not turning off his phone in the theater, Schmitt clarified, "I missed the first call!" He explained that he didn't answer until Sacramento River Cats manager Dave Brundage called to give him the news. Schmitt left to take the call but insisted, "The movie was already over!"

While film purists may be making up their minds about Schmitt, Giants fans had to be delighted by his major league debut, where he homered in his second at-bat in front of roughly 60 friends and relatives. Some came from as far as North Carolina, which is almost like traveling from Nowhere all the way to Olgocorp headquarters.

That group included both of Schmitt's parents, his 84-year-old grandmother, and his baby nephew, whose presence inspired an epic Duane Kuiper home run call.

"Hold on dad. Do not drop that kid!" joins the pantheon of great Giants home run calls, alongside "Buster Posey's good friend Hunter Pence."

Schmitt didn't share his feelings about the film or whether it lived up to his expectations from the previous two movies. It does feature a villain called the High Evolutionary, which may have given Schmitt the confidence to "evolve" into a shortstop despite primarily playing at third base.

And perhaps he was inspired by the Guardians themselves. Schmitt "destroyed" the ball like Drak, hit a Rocket of a blast to center, used a bat made of wood from a tree (like Groot!), and he turned a rally-killing double play in the third inning, just like Star-Lord, Gamora, and Nebula have killed many, many people. Jeez, those Guardians are murderers! 

Schmitt's first game, all the relatives in attendance, a dramatic home run. Why, it's almost cinematic. The SF Giants are hoping that when it comes to Casey Schmitt's home run, there's plenty of sequels.
