Diamondbacks dominate Padres 8-1 on bullpen day
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Following a loss due to an 8th inning collapse last night, the Diamondbacks rebounded by securing wins in both games of their Sunday doubleheader against the Padres.

With this win, Arizona has now won seven of their last nine games and also split the season series with the Padres at six games apiece. This marks a significant turnaround from last season, when the D-backs struggled, posting a 5-14 record against their divisional rivals.

Despite today being a bullpen day, the Diamondbacks once again succeeded in containing the heart of the Padres’ lineup, widely regarded as one of the strongest in all of baseball.

Scott McGough, who holds a 1-7 record in relief this year, started the night with 2.1 shutout innings in his first career start.

Subsequently, the rookie Bryce Jarvis harnessed this momentum for the ensuing three innings. In only his second MLB appearance, Jarvis conceded a mere two hits while also orchestrating two crucial double plays.

Between four different relievers, the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff held the top four of San Diego’s lineup to an 0-13 night.

And on the flipside, Arizona’s offense struck from all cylinders.

While there were plenty of contributions all around, it was a special night for C Gabriel Moreno. The rookie, after recently returning from the IL, hit his first career grand slam, effectively sealing the Diamondbacks win in the 7th inning.

Overall, five different Diamondback hitters secured a minimum of two hits each. With the exception of Ketel Marte and Kyle Lewis, who went a combined 0-10, the team managed an impressive 13-25 at the plate.

Whether it was the 13 hits on offense or the outstanding performance by the relievers, this game truly felt like a flashback to just a few months ago.

Having wrapped up their four-game series against the Padres, Arizona will enjoy a much-needed day off before embarking on a seven-game homestand beginning on Monday.

Kicking off this homestand, the Texas Rangers will be making their way to town. The first pitch is set for 6:40 PM.
