Former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz voted first-ballot Hall of Famer

David Ortiz will be the newest member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame after he was voted in Tuesday, the Hall announced. The induction ceremony will be held on July 24.

Ortiz, 46, made his MLB debut in 1997 with the Minnesota Twins and played six seasons with the team before he was released in December 2002. He joined the Boston Red Sox on a cheap free agency deal and quickly became a star with his new team. 

Ortiz earned ten trips to the All-Star game during his time with the Red Sox and finished top five in American League MVP voting in each of his first five seasons in Boston. Ortiz twice led the AL in runs batted in and led the league in home runs during the 2006 season with 54.

He may be best remembered for his postseason heroics, helping the Red Sox to win the World Series three times during his time with the team after Boston went more than eight decades without a ring. He was the 2013 World Series MVP and hit two walk-off home runs during the 2004 postseason.

While Ortiz was voted into the Hall of Fame on Tuesday, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were both left out in their last year of eligibility.
