Giants activate INF Wilmer Flores, option INF Isan Díaz
USA TODAY Sports

The SF Giants activated infielder Wilmer Flores from the injured list and optioned infielder Isan Díaz to Triple-A Sacramento prior to the start of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Flores was placed on the injured list 10 days ago with a foot contusion after fouling a ball off his foot. Díaz was called up late last week after outfielder Mike Yastrzemski landed on the injured list.

Flores has been as productive as ever this season for the Giants. The veteran infielder, who is able to play first, second, and third base, is hitting .258/.324/.452 with nine doubles, seven home runs, 16 walks, and 29 strikeouts in 173 plate appearances this season with the team.

Despite his solid play, Flores has seen his playing time dip this season because of excellent performances from LaMonte Wade Jr., Thairo Estrada, and J.D. Davis at his primary defensive positions. Limited to serving as the team's primary designated hitter against left-handed starting pitching, the emergence of infielder prospect Casey Schmitt (Giants preseason #3 prospect) has also made it harder for Flores to find a role. Granted, Schmitt's recent struggles have lessened speculation that Flores could find himself on the trade block.

The Giants added Díaz to their 40-man roster at the end of last season after an excellent year in Sacramento. A former top-100 prospect with the Miami Marlins-where he played from 2019-2021-he was expected to compete for a spot on the Giants Opening Day roster this spring but was sidelined by an injury. Upon his return, he hit .316/.350/.684 with a double and two home runs in five games at Triple-A before he was called up. He appeared in two games with the Giants and went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts.

The SF Giants have been reeling from injuries all season long, but they welcomed veteran infielder Wilmer Flores back to the active roster on Tuesday and hope to get some other big names, like Alex Cobb, back in the coming week.
