Here's Reported Contract Details Of Rising Star Brayan Bello's Notable Extension

The Boston Red Sox have been pinching pennies this offseason but finally chose to spend on one of their most promising young stars.

News broke Thursday that Brayan Bello agreed to a contract extension worth $55 million over the next six years, and MassLive's Chris Cotillo broke it down year-by-year:

"According to a source, Bello will receive a $1 million signing bonus, then be paid $1 million in 2024, $1 million in 2025, $2.5 million in 2026, $6 million in 2027, $8.5 million in 2028 and $19 million in 2029," Cotillo wrote. "The contract also includes performance bonuses and escalators if he’s selected to the All-Star Game or receives Cy Young votes. There aren’t any incentives based on appearances or starts."

The deal also includes a $21 million club option for 2030 -- which will be a notable bargain if Bello comes close to reaching his ceiling. 

Bello posted a 4.24 ERA with a 132-to-45 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .270 batting average against and a 1.34 WHIP in 157 innings pitched across 28 games last season.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow successfully locked down a homegrown pitcher until or through 2030 and doubled down on his philosophy of letting some of the younger guys become cornerstones of the roster. 

Bello is still just 24 years old, meaning he'll just be creeping into his 30s by the time his extension is over. Boston may have faced a mass amount of criticism for not spending this winter, but at the very least they managed to extend one of their most promising stars.
