Kevin Newman Parts Ways with Diamondbacks, Exits Minor League Contract

After experiencing a challenging spring at the plate, marked by a .194 batting average across 41 plate appearances, infielder Kevin Newman has decided to opt out of his minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, thereby becoming a free agent.

Newman attended University of Arizona and was then drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1st round of the 2015 draft.

Newman, an alumnus of the University of Arizona, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 2015 draft. He spent the initial five seasons of his career with the Pirates, achieving his best year in 2019. During that season, he boasted a .308 batting average and an .800 OPS over 130 games.

Following his tenure with the Pirates, Newman transitioned to the Cincinnati Reds. There, he played in various positions across the infield, including third base, shortstop, second base, and even first base.

Most recently, on January 3rd, Newman inked a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks. However, with his prospects of making the Opening Day roster looking bleak—primarily due to the Diamondbacks favoring Blaze Alexander as their backup option—Newman has chosen to seek playing opportunities elsewhere.
