New York Yankees Named Trade Suitor For Intriguing Pitcher
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

It appears that the New York Yankees are poised to contend as one of the top teams in baseball for the rest of the season. Despite the initial expectations for the team at the beginning of the year, they have met all the demands placed upon them thus far.

The anticipation surrounding the 2024 season grows even more exciting considering that Gerrit Cole, their ace pitcher, has yet to take the mound.

However, with Cole still sidelined, acquiring additional pitching depth around the trade deadline seems like a prudent move. Even if the Cy Young Award winner were healthy, bolstering the pitching staff is customary for teams in contention. Undoubtedly, a team like the Yankees can never have too much pitching talent.

There’s also the slight concern that if Cole’s performance is affected by his ongoing elbow injury, it would further justify the front office’s decision to pursue additional arms.

Adam Weinrib, writing for Yanks Go Yard, has outlined some potential options for the Yankees at the trade deadline, one of which includes Martin Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Perez, a left-handed pitcher, earned an All-Star nod in 2022 with an impressive 2.89 ERA, marking the best season of his career thus far. Since his debut in 2012, he has consistently maintained an ERA above 3.60, making his standout performance in 2022 particularly notable.

In the current season, Perez has started six games for the Pirates, boasting a stellar 2.86 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.

While the 33-year-old would certainly provide valuable depth to the New York Yankees’ pitching rotation, it’s unlikely that he alone would be the deciding factor in whether New York secures a World Series title.

However, if Perez can sustain his current level of performance, that assessment could change. Nonetheless, his career stats, including a 4.40 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP, suggest that maintaining such excellence over the course of an entire season may be challenging for him.
