Report: Phillies have contacted Red Sox about relief pitcher Brandon Workman

The struggling Philadelphia Phillies are looking for some bullpen help ahead of Major League Baseball's Aug. 31 trade deadline, and they've, apparently, been in contact with one team who's looking to sell.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb, the Phillies have been in contact with the Boston Red Sox about relief pitcher Brandon Workman.

It's no surprise that the Phillies have targeted the Red Sox as a potential trade partner. Boston is actively looking for ways to improve their roster, and team president Sam Kennedy acknowledged in recent weeks that no player is untouchable in trade discussions.

The Red Sox likely will be looking for assets that will help them in the future, specifically in the form of young, promising prospects.

If Boston parts ways with Workman, one of their better bullpen arms, they'll become even less competitive in 2020.

Workman earned his fourth save of the season on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles in a 7-1 victory. He has a 4.05 ERA, eight strikeouts and a 1.800 WHIP in 6.2 innings pitched.

The 32-year-old is a two-time World Series champion with the Red Sox.
