Should The Cubs Bring Andrew Chafin Back Into Their Bullpen?

The Chicago Cubs have made a couple moves this offseason to add some pitchers to their roster this season.

However, they can still use some bullpen help for the 2023 season.

One free agent pitcher who knows the city of Chicago well is Andrew Chafin.

Chafin, who spent part of 2020 and part of 2021 with the Cubs, is a solid relief pitcher for any bullpen.

With the Cubs looking at left-handed pitching this offseason, adding Chafin back to their bullpen makes sense.

His 2021 season with the Cubs saw him making 43 appearances, in which he had a 2.06 ERA and 17 holds in 39.1 innings pitched.

It was also during that season where he was part of Cubs history, throwing a combined no-hitter.

Solid pitching like this has been a thing for him even after leaving Chicago.

His 2021 stint with the Oakland Athletics saw him make 28 appearances with a 1.53 ERA, five holds, and five saves over 29.1 innings pitched.

While 2021 was his best season, he still had a solid 2022 with the Detroit Tigers.

His time there saw him with a 2.83 ERA with 19 holds and three saves in 57.1 innings pitched.

Even with the uptick in ERA with the Tigers, he’s still a solid pitcher.

However, some might be concerned with him being able to keep getting better at 32 years old.

But the concern shouldn’t be a thing, as he’s been a solid pitcher for most of his career.

With 2016 and the start of 2020 being his only low points, signing him gives the Cubs a reliever they need.

While the Cubs let him walk before, they need to sign him now to make an improvement to their bullpen.
