Bryce Mitchell Demands Respect For Short-Notice Josh Emmett Fight, Complains About 'Crickets' After Win Over Edson Barboza

Tonight's UFC 296 pay-per-view marks a big one for featherweight contender Bryce Mitchell, as he looks to make the most of a short-notice opportunity to end his year on a winning streak.

Mitchell, who currently occupies the #10 spot at 145 pounds, entered 2023 off the back of his first defeat in professional MMA. The loss came at the hands of upcoming title challenger Ilia Topuria and appeared to leave "Thug Nasty" contemplating retirement in the heat of the moment.

Fast forward 12 months and Mitchell is coming off a strong performance against Dan Ige to return to winning ways and has the chance to climb further up the ladder at the expense of Josh Emmett.

But when the Arkansas native shares the Octagon with the former interim title challenger in Las Vegas, he's targeting more than just an entry into the championship conversation.

Mitchell Won't Be 'Denied' If UFC 296 Fight Goes His Way

During a recent interview with ex-UFC champion Michael Bisping, Mitchell looked ahead to today's pay-per-view event, which will see him make the walk on less than two weeks' notice.

Despite boasting an undefeated record prior to his meeting with Topuria and recording a dominant win over Edson Barboza, Mitchell believes his skills and potential remain underestimated.

That's something he's hoping to change inside the T-Mobile Arena tonight.

"You can't argue. When I beat this guy, I'm proven, and you know it," Mitchell said. "You'll know it by the results. The results will speak for themselves. I can't be denied. That's why I'm excited about this match.

"Even Barboza. Edson Barboza, Bisping, brother, I've never seen anybody kick that hard and that fast in my life, never," Mitchell continued. "I scraped by, beat a guy like Edson, and you don't hear nothing, it's crickets. They act like it never happened. I'm telling you, eventually people are gonna realize I can fight with the best, I can beat the best, I believe I am the best. I'm just trying to convince everybody else of that."

With his sights on avenging the submission defeat he suffered against Topuria in 2022, a victory over Emmett — who was dominantly outpointed by "El Matador" this past June — would no doubt go a long way to forcing a rematch.

And should Topuria upset the odds to unseat Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 next February, perhaps a win at UFC 296 will mark the first step in setting up a second dance between the Georgian-Spaniard and "Thug Nasty" with the gold on the line.
