Colby Covington already lost two welterweight championship fights against Kamaru Usman, but a third meeting may be in the cards one day, according to UFC president Dana White.
Covington, 34, solidified his placement as the top contender in the 170-pound division Saturday night with a dominant, unanimous decision victory over two-time title challenger Jorge Masvidal.
"He's in a very weird place having lost to Usman twice," White told reporters after the fight. "Usman is lapping everybody. ... If [Covington] stays at 170 and keeps winning, eventually you've got to give the kid a shot again."
Usman, 34, is recovering from hand surgery and is expected to next face streaking contender Leon Edwards. There's also a matchup next month between former championship challenger Gilbert Burns and fast-rising prospect Khamzat Chimaev, which may line up another title contender for Usman.
If Covington did eventually get a third shot at Usman, it'd be a rare, but not unprecedented, UFC trilogy for a fighter up two wins to zero against a rival. Tito Ortiz beat Ken Shamrock in all three of their meetings, and Frankie Edgar won three fights against B.J. Penn.
In his post-fight interview, Covington called out Dustin Poirier, but said in a press conference that he has "unfinished business" with Usman.
