Josh Thomson Points Out Potential Mistake With Kevin Holland's Training After Loss At Noche UFC: 'That's A Big No-No!'

Josh Thomson has some concerns about how Kevin Holland's training may be structured now that the welterweight has opened his own gym.

“Trailblazer” closed out 2022 with back-to-back losses, but he quickly rebounded this year by earning stoppage wins over Santiago Ponzinibbio and Michael Chiesa. Those victories set him up for a co-main event matchup at Noche UFC opposite Jack Della Maddalena, where Holland put in a solid performance but came up short on the judges’ scorecards.

Speaking with his co-host “Big” John McCarthy on their show Weighing In, Thomson shared some thoughts on Holland’s performance and considered what may have kept the welterweight from collecting his third-straight win.

“I can’t figure him out,” Thomson said. “What else gives me the creeps though right now is that he said he opened his own gym, he has his own spot. And now he’s calling the shots, he said that...To me, that’s a big no-no.”

Josh Thomson: Kevin Holland Needs "A Trainer That Controls Your Training For You"

Opening a gym is obviously exciting news for Holland from a business standpoint, but Thomson worries that “Trailblazer” may not be getting the same kind of results out of his training camp when he’s the one in control of everything.

“Having your own gym, congratulations. I don’t wish that upon anybody, but having your own gym, it feels good. This is mine, I own it, it’s my own place to train, all these things. I love it, I love all that. But the focus then becomes you’re able to control your training, that’s never a good thing. You’ve gotta have a trainer that controls your training for you…This is what we’re doing, this is our schedule… I don’t know if calling the shots made a difference, but in this fight he just can’t seem to use fight IQ.”

The Noche UFC co-main event was a huge bout for the welterweight division, and after extending his unbeaten record in the UFC it looks like Della Maddalena may be due for a matchup with a Top 10 opponent for his next outing.

Holland was quick to make a suggestion for his next matchup even after he came up short on the scorecards against the Australian, which is no surprise considering the 30-year-old indicated ahead of Noche UFC that the primary goal for his fighting career is to stay as active as possible.
