Host of UFC Ultimate Insider Megan Olivi recently shed some light on what it's like being married to an MMA fighter.
Olivi married former UFC flyweight combatant Joseph Benavidez back 2015, six years before his retirement from professional MMA. Benavidez retired with a 28-8 record in the cage, closing out his fighting career on a tough three-fight skid, including back-to-back losses to Deiveson Figueiredo.
During a recent discussion on MMA on SiriusXM, Olivi was asked if she had any relationship advice for the partners of professional fighters.
Olivi had two important suggestions, starting with emphasizing that sometimes the fighter must be put first and their partners have to accept taking a backseat.
"I have two things I can say," Olivi said. "Number one is it is not about you. No matter what their camp looks like, no matter what the fight looks like. I have cried in my car, in the shower, I have eaten sandwiches outside the door on the floor of a hotel because I didn't want to eat in front of him. I have had the most nerves that you've ever seen in a human being ever, and those things are not something I would ever put on him."
The other was to be considerate of what fighters are going through. In turn, being quiet and letting them iron out the stress of cutting weight, and the just the stress of fighting in general, can be the ideal way to go.
"The other thing I'd say is just learn to be quiet," Olivi said. "Weight cuts are tough. There's a lot of mental anguish that comes in to preparing for a fight as well, you don't have to fill the space."
