Frankie Muniz teases Daytona plans after working on simulator with Cole Custer
Alex Gould / USA TODAY NETWORK / USA TODAY NETWORK

No word on his team or which series he will be racing in, but Frankie Muniz teased today that he will be racing at Daytona this year. The actor-turned-professional driver spent last season in the ARCA Menards Series, now he’s hoping to move up to NASCAR.

It has been surprising that Frankie hasn’t had more concrete plans for 2024. He performed very well last year with Rette Jones Racing in ARCA. While the Toyotas of Venturini dominated the season, Muniz held his own amidst a slew of mechanical issues.

What has surprised me the most about the 38-year-old is his car control. He has been able to avoid wrecks and trouble on track with quick thinking and solid control.

What is ahead of Frankie Muniz remains unknown, for now. However, he did thank Cole Custer, defending Xfinity Series champion, for helping him on the simulator.

I would assume that would lend itself to being the series Muniz competes in at Daytona.

The ARCA Menards Series is tricky. You can display talent in the series and still not succeed. In the 2023 season, Muniz finished with ten top-10 finishes as well as a top-5 finish at Michigan. The bad news is that Muniz was a DNF in five of his final eight races, including four straight. A lot of that was due to mechanical issues beyond his control.

Frankie Muniz has potential in NASCAR, short window

No, Frankie Muniz is not your typical NASCAR driver. He has not had the typical journey into racing. What he does have is enthusiasm, passion, talent, and marketability. At least, one would think the Hollywood star would be able to find funding from sponsors.

At 38, Muniz doesn’t have the same mileage so to speak as other drivers his age. He hasn’t been doing the grind for the last 15-20 years in NASCAR or another racing series. That’s both good and bad. He has a short window to work with, but it isn’t as short as it might seem.

Wear and tear on a driver can be massive by the time they are 40 or older. As Muniz sits two years under that age, he probably has a few years to get the most out of his NASCAR career. Expect Muniz to swing for the fences, look to make headlines when he gets a chance (for the right reasons), and try to speed-run his NASCAR dreams.

Frankie Muniz could find success in the Xfinity Series given the right situation. I think it would be a great fit depending on what team he lands with. Ford Performance has put its backing behind Muniz and sees a benefit to having him on their roster. Perhaps that will play a part in his Daytona ride and the success of his efforts in two weeks.
