Grizzlies to get another boost at the guard position

Besides Ja Morant, Grizzlies to get another boost at the guard position

Ja Morant's impending season debut for the Memphis Grizzlies will be a hot topic surrounding the franchise. However, Marcus Smart is also nearing a return to the rotation in a boost that could significantly impact the team's fortunes.

According to Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Smart could make his return from injury before the end of the week. He has been dealing with a sprained foot which has kept him out of the Grizzlies rotation since Nov. 14.

Smart's presence in the rotation will significantly improve the Grizzlies' defense. He will also provide leadership and some reliable ball-handling and playmaking. However, with Morant now back in the rotation, it will be interesting to see whether Smart is relegated to a bench role or tasked with operating as an off-guard next to the returning All-Star.

The Grizzlies acquired Smart as part of the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics. Yet, his first few months in the Western Conference haven't gone to plan. In recent years, Smart has become accustomed to winning at a high level and competing for deep postseason runs. That hasn't been the case under Taylor Jenkins to begin the season.

Nevertheless, Smart is slowly getting to grips with his new role and new teammates. He's averaging 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and five assists while shooting 42.9% from the field and 29.5% from three-point range over his first 11 games.

Grizzlies' fans will be hoping that Morant and Smart can help turn the tide for their franchise. The team has been struggling to begin the season, currently sitting 13th in the Western Conference with a 6-19 record. Expecting immediate fireworks may be a mistake, though. Both Smart and Morant will need time to get back up to game speed and reach their usual performance levels. Still, after a slow start to the season, the return of both guards will be welcomed by the fanbase and the coaching staff.
