Celtics, Jrue Holiday Agree To Massive Contract Extension
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The 2023 NBA offseason was a busy one for veteran point guard Jrue Holiday. He was involved in two separate blockbuster trades, the first being between the Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers.

Milwaukee sent him to Portland as part of the trade package to acquire Damian Lillard. He wasn’t with the Trail Blazers very long, as they sent him back east to the Boston Celtics only a few days later.

Now, he is going to be able to call Boston home for the foreseeable future. As shared by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Celtics and Holiday have agreed to a massive contract extension, per his agent Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management.

It is a four-year, $135 million deal for Holiday. As part of the extension signing, he is declining his $37.3 million player option that he had for the 2024-25 NBA season to sign the long-term deal.

Holiday is now under contract through the 2027-28 NBA season. While he sacrificed a little bit of money upfront, the long-term security more than makes up for it. This is a good deal for both sides, as the Celtics benefit greatly from the extension as well.

By agreeing to an extension with Holiday, the Celtics are saving several millions of dollars off the salary cap next year. That will help in their efforts to keep their core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White and Holiday together.

It is a smart move by Boston, as this group has been dominant this season. The Celtics have been the best team in the NBA, running away with the Eastern Conference and already locking up the No. 1 overall seed in the NBA Playoffs.

Holiday has been integral to that success. While his points per game average has dropped, he has become a deadly 3-point shooter, taking advantage of the attention his teammates draw. He is knocking down a career-high 43 percent of his 3-pointers, which includes a scorching 62 percent on corner threes.
