Report: Wizards not rushing to move Chris Paul

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Washington Wizards are not 'in a hurry' to make a decision on Chris Paul's future.

"Washington can imagine a world where they would like Chris Paul to be their point guard this season," Wojnarowski said on a June 20 episode of Sports Center. "They're not trying to be really bad. They may bring back Kyle Kuzma, Kristaps Porzingis...There are still conversations to be had between Chris Paul and the Wizards...The Wizards are in no hurry, I'm told, to start discussing the possibility of a contract buyout"

By trading away Bradley Beal, the Wizards were moving on from their best player. The franchise has been mired in mediocrity for over a decade. To avoid hitting the reset button this summer would be borderline negligence. Both Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis have player options on their deals for next season, so now would be the perfect time to clear the books and start from scratch. That would mean trading away Paul and looking to obtain some draft compensation or young project players in return.

If the Wizards decide to run things back, it would likely mean another season of struggling to make the play-in tournament. Yes, Paul will ensure the ball moves and his playmaking will uplift his teammates, but the Wizards don't have the necessary supporting cast.

Paul's current contract is partially guaranteed for this season and non-guaranteed in 2024. As such, there will be multiple contending teams willing to part with young players and draft assets in the hope of improving their chances of contention. Now is the perfect time for Washington to begin planning for its future rather than being content with residing in NBA purgatory year after year.
