Stephon Marbury is bringing back his super cheap sneakers

Not all of us could afford Air Jordan sneakers growing up. While my mother pinched pennies one year to get me a pair I had been wanting for leading up to Christmas, the $120.00 price tag over two decades ago was ridiculous.

Enter into the equation former NBA star Stephon Marbury, who gave a lot of basketball fans and wannabe professional players a cheap alternative to those expensive sneakers that were out of our price range.

Not seen on the market since 2009, the (in)famous Starbury sneaker line appears to be back in the mix. The current Chinese Basketball Association star announced via the social media site Instagram that his famous sneaker line is returning.

For those who don't remember Marbury's sneakers from years ago, they were priced at a cheap $15.00 as a homage to his childhood when he couldn't afford the top-end sneakers other children were sporting.

It remains to be seen how much Starbury sneakers will cost when they are unveiled, but it's safe to assume they will be much cheaper than the well-known options on the market right now.

Stephen Curry's Under Armour line is selling for anywhere from $109.00 to $119.00 at Foot Locker. Meanwhile, Jordan Brand shoes can be seen for upwards of $200.00 on the same site.

While Marbury's star appeal is nowhere near where it was when he was suiting up in the NBA, he has a cult following in China. He's led the Beijing Ducks to three championships since he took his basketball career to Asia. A statue was even erected of the former NBA malcontent outside of the famed Wukesong Stadium in Beijing earlier this year.

Starring in a well-received play about himself and taking his team to multiple championships in a country that's embraced the game Marbury loves, there is a good chance his sneaker line could be a smashing success internationally. And while expectations should be muted here in the states, Marbury knows exactly what he is doing.

Marbury, 38, played 13 years in the NBA. He earned two trips to the All-Star game and averaged 20-plus points seven different times in his career. The former No. 4 overall pick last suited up in the NBA for the New York Knicks in 2008-09.
