Baker Mayfield Discusses His Injury
Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield injuring his ankle on the first drive of the team’s 27-20 loss at Indianapolis proved to be a major storyline for the rest of the afternoon. Tampa Bay was having a fantastic opening drive, moving the ball down the field to get the ball at the Colts 1-yard line. After an offsides penalty on the Colts moved them even closer, Mayfield was injured on first-and-goal following a failed QB sneak attempt.

Mayfield held his right leg in pain as trainers examined at him. Kyle Trask came into replace him for the goal line series, and after a false start penalty on Aaron Stinnie pushed the Bucs back five yards, the team ended up settling for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

It was revealed that Baker Mayfield suffered an ankle injury, but was able to come back in for the next drive and play the rest of the game.

So how did he get hurt? Not even he knows.

“Honestly, I have zero idea,” Mayfield said. “We’ll see.”

Mayfield should get credit for being able to grind it out. He was determined to stay in the game and try to help the Bucs win, even rushing for a first down to keep a drive going. There was really one thing that kept him playing throughout.

“Adrenaline is a hell of a drug,” Mayfield said in his post-game press conference.

Baker Mayfield Reveals Discussions Over His Return To Action

Although hobbled, Baker Mayfield wound up completing 20-of-30 passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns passes to Mike Evans and one interception. He also ran three times for 14 yards, converting one for a third down.

It wasn’t all pretty for Mayfield, though. He was sacked six times in the game and clearly wasn’t as mobile as we’ve seen him this season. There were moments early on after his return where it looked as if he might have come back a little too quickly. Mayfield didn’t maneuver around the pocket as successfully as he had in previous games.

Mayfield explained the process that allowed him to get back into the game.

“Just having an open line of communication with those guys and being honest about how I feel,” Baker Mayfield said. “At first, it didn’t feel very good, and then it kind of eased up as the game went on, but once the adrenaline goes down it’s there.”

He may not have been at one hundred percent, but he still felt he gave his team the best chance to win.

“They do the tests and run around on it,” Mayfield said. “If I feel like I’d be hindering us, there’s a different side of it. I feel like I was good enough to go.”

What Happens Next Week?

Just because the game is over doesn’t mean that much changes with this injury. Plenty of attention will be paid to Baker Mayfield’s ankle injury over the next week as the Bucs prepare for the Panthers. Don’t expect to see much of Mayfield during practice, especially early on.

“A lot of treatment, a lot of mental reps early in the week and just see where it goes from there,” Mayfield said about how the next couple of days look for him. “I’m sure I’ll have an MRI tomorrow and go from there.”

Bucs head coach said it’ll be a wait and see situation with their starting quarterback. If Mayfield can’t play next Sunday then Kyle Trask could get his first NFL start against Carolina.

“He finished the rest of the game,” Bowles said of Mayfield. “I’ll have to wait until he gets checked out and see how bad it is after the game once he puts it up. That’s going to be the tell-tale sign.”
