Browns add another bruising running back to mix

The Cleveland Browns watched four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb suffer a season-ending knee injury last season. So, they are covering all of their bases heading into 2024 by adding another running back to the mix.

According to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, Cleveland is signing running back D'Onta Foreman, who spent the 2023 season with the Chicago Bears.

Foreman is coming off a bit of a down year, having rushed for just 425 yards and four touchdowns in nine games in the fall. However, the Browns figure to be crossing their fingers they are landing the 2022 version of the former Texas back, who rushed for 914 yards and five touchdowns with the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 campaign.

While Cleveland most likely won't need Foreman to take the bulk of the carries upcoming – the team is hoping Chubb will be fully healthy by the start of the season – he has shown he can handle a big workload if needed. The 6-foot, 235-pound running back has produced 80 or more yards in every game with at least 16 carries since 2022 (eight games total), per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Chubb's timeline to return is also still unknown. He suffered his knee injury all the way back in Week 2 of last season, but it was a serious injury diagnosed as a torn MCL and a damaged ACL. Plus, it's the same knee he injured in 2015 at Georgia.

If Chubb is not ready by Week 1, the Browns now have a little extra insurance. They already signed former Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines this offseason, while running backs Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. are also under contract in 2024.

Of course, Chubb being healthy solves all of Cleveland's issues, but it's never a bad thing to have too much depth at a physical position like running back. Foreman provides that and then some.
