Buccaneers' Lavonte David suggests offense will improve under Dave Canales

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David suggested the team's offense will improve following the hiring of new offensive coordinator Dave Canales. 

"It’s different," David said of what he noticed about the offense during springtime workouts, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "There’s a lot of movement going around, a lot of different personnel [groups], a lot of different looks that they’re giving us. It gives us a chance to communicate defensively and adjust on the fly." 

Tampa Bay's offense routinely left much to be desired last season as now-retired quarterback Tom Brady dealt with off-the-field distractions that first impacted the team when he took an 11-day break away from the club during the preseason. 

According to ESPN stats, the Buccaneers finished the regular season dead last with an average of 76.9 rushing yards per game and ranked 25th in scoring with 18.4 points per contest. 

After the Buccaneers parted ways with then-offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and five other assistants in January, former Tampa Bay head coach and current senior advisor Bruce Arians made it known he was "extremely unhappy" regarding such decisions. David indicated that Canales, who previously served as the quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks, has already provided Tampa Bay's offense with a needed boost. 

"They’re giving us great looks, something that we haven’t seen in a while," David continued about the new-look Tampa Bay offense. "(Arians') offense is more taking deep shots down the field, this offense is taking what the defense gives them." 

For better or for worse, Brady isn't coming back to save the 2023 edition of the Buccaneers. Instead, Tampa Bay will start either veteran Baker Mayfield or 2021 second-round draft pick Kyle Trask depending on the winner of a competition that reportedly could run deep into training camp. 

If the offense produces better overall numbers under Canales this fall, that could show that Leftwich and not a supposed diminished version of Brady failed the Buccaneers last season.
