Bucs Injury Update: Baker Mayfield’s Ankle
Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

As if the Bucs and their fans weren’t down enough already after losing a close game to the Colts, 27-20, and ending up on the wrong side of the score in six of their last seven games, they also have to worry about the injury to starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

On the first drive to open up the game in Indianapolis, Mayfield injured his ankle after a QB sneak was stopped short on first-and-goal from the Colts 1. Mayfield limped off the field and missed the next two plays, which resulted in the Bucs kicking a field. But he showed his toughness by returning on Tampa Bay’s next drive and finishing the game.

The degree of severity for Baker Mayfield’s ankle injury wasn’t known after the game as the adrenaline was pumping through the Bucs’ starting quarterback while he played. But once that wore off and the swelling picked up up, it can tell a different story.

Todd Bowles Reveals Baker Mayfield’s MRI Test

On Monday, Baker Mayfield got an MRI and head coach Todd Bowles shared the information of the results.

“He’s pretty sore. The MRI was negative,” Bowles said. “He has a sore ankle. We’ll see how he’s feeling during the week, but it came out negative so that’s a good thing.”

Following the game, Mayfield alluded to not practicing that much either. Bowles didn’t flat out say it this Monday, but he talked about giving him breaks when it was necessary.

We’ll find out at practice the rest of this week how much he can go. It sounds like there won’t be much to see. The most important objective is to get him healthy enough by Sunday.

“We’ll try to give him a break when he needs one during the week and see how he feels,” Bowles said. “I’ve got to see how he’s moving.”

Practice Plans For Baker Mayfield

Mobility in the pocket is of extra importance in this Bucs offense for getting the quarterback to throw on the run, and specifically for Baker Mayfield to avoid pressure from defenders on the pass rush. With Baker Mayfield limited in what he could do on Sunday because of the injury slowing him down, he was sacked six times.

Previously, Mayfield has been able to allude the defense to either buy himself more time or scramble up the field. He was only able to do that on one occasion last game.

Kyle Trask had his second cameo appearance of the season. If Mayfield can’t practice much, that means the coaches can get an extra look at their backup with the starters.

Some fans have been clamoring for the Bucs to start Trask to see what the team has in him since he’s a second-round pick and the Bucs’ playoff hopes are slim to begin with.

A good showing from Trask in practice isn’t going to immediately change Todd Bowles’ mind, but it at least gives the team something more to think about if Bowles decides to roll with Trask in the weeks later.
