Buffalo Bills inked Mitch Trubisky to two-year deal for $5.25 million

The Buffalo Bills signed Mitch Trubisky to a new deal on Wednesday, bringing the quarterback back to town after two seasons away. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the contract details reveal that he inked for two years, $5.25 million. The deal includes $2.7 million guaranteed for this season and it also includes incentives that could max out the total sum at $8.45 million if he ends up playing significantly – and winning.

Trubisky was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers in February, which gave him time to find his new team before the beginning of free agency. It was a decision made after the two parties met to discuss his future in Pittsburgh. The last deal he signed with the Steelers was an extension for two years and $11.25 million.

The former Chicago Bears draft pick spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, splitting time with quarterback Kenny Pickett over the last two seasons. He previously served as Josh Allen‘s backup in Buffalo in 2021. The QB contributed 1,884 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions to the Steelers over 12 games played across his two seasons with the franchise.

Trubisky returns to Buffalo

Trubisky has amassed over 12,000 career passing yards and has thrown 72 touchdowns over a seven-year career. He started at quarterback for four seasons with the Bears after going No. 2 overall in 2017. He was named to the 2018 Pro Bowler during his time in Chicago.

He’s also a 1,000-yard career rusher, having put together 1,173 yards and 13 additional touchdowns since joining the league. A massive chunk of that total is thanks to him compiling 421 rushing yards during his Pro Bowl season. 

His last game in black and yellow came on Dec. 16 during a 30-13 loss against the Indianapolis Colts. Trubisky finished the game completing 16-of-23 passes for 169 yards while throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.

Now, he will serve as a capable backup for Allen once again in an attempt to help elevate the quarterback room in Buffalo. He’ll be hoping to help ready Allen for a potential Super Bowl run in 2025 after being thwarted in the playoffs once again this past postseason.

Bills re-sign Taylor Rapp

In related news, the Bills also reached an agreement to re-sign safety Taylor Rapp to a three-year deal worth $14.5 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Rapp played the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Rams, where he won a Super Bowl in 2022.

The signing of Trubisky and Rapp cap off a strong day for the Bills ahead of the new league year on March 13.
