Chiefs Star reveals dream to sign with AFC rival 'before my career ends'

Smith has one tackle-needy team in mind for free agency should the Chiefs not extend the veteran lineman. According to Mark Cannizzaro with the New York Post, Smith said Thursday his dream is to play for the New York Jets:

“I’m a take-it-as-it-comes kind of guy, and I’m where my feet are right now, obviously, for this game,’’ he said. “But at the end of the day, it’s my life, my career, and I’ve got to figure it out. I grew up a Jets fan. I’m from New York, so that would definitely be something I would appreciate before my career ends.

“It would, for sure, be cool to be able to have my name and number on the jersey of my hometown team I grew up with and watched as my favorite. … It would definitely be something that’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for a lot of people, so we’ll see when that day comes. But right now, I’m just focusing on the big game.’’

The Jets would be a perfect fit for Donovan Smith

The Jets would be a perfect fit for Smith. Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1 because of the offensive line. Offensive tackle was considered the weak spot on the Jets’ offensive line.

Smith would be able to say he’s blocked for three of the best quarterbacks in his generation if he were signed by the Jets in March. Smith won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. He has a chance to win another with Patrick Mahomes on Sunday.

Smith said blocking for Rodgers next season would add to his already impressive legacy:

“That would be some legacy,’’ Smith said. “I take it as a privilege. At the end of the day, I’m sure that these guys have a say on who’s protecting their blind side, so that’s a testament to me and my work and what I provide. I’m writing my own legacy.’’

Could Smith be the missing piece on the offense that could allow Rodgers to lead the Jets to a Super Bowl next season?
