Dallas Cowboys render decision on kicker for Divisional Round
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys have made their decision for FG kicker

The Cowboys will play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the right to play in the NFC championship game. The team had question marks coming into the game, the biggest of which was with their kicker, Brett Maher.

Maher missed four extra points in the Cowboys’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday night. He became the first kicker in recorded NFL history to miss four extra points in a game. His early misses changed the Cowboys’ fourth-down strategy against the Buccaneers. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the game the Cowboys wouldn’t replace Maher.

However, the Cowboys signed kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad this week. It was assumed the Cowboys would have a kicking competition betwen Maher and Vizcaino for Sunday’s game. We have an aswer to who won the battle as of Saturday afternoon.

According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Cowboys chose not to elevate Vizcaino from the practice squad. That means Maher will get another chance to kick field goals and extra points for the Cowboys on Sunday.

Maher was solid for the Cowboys this season. He made over 90 percent of his field goals and 94 percent of his extra points. Maher will look to get back on track Sunday in San Francisco.

Cowboys elevations and signings

According to Todd Archer with ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys made a few other roster decisions Saturday. They signed offensive lineman Aviante Collins to the 53-man roster. A move on the offensive line was expected after the Cowboys ruled starting left tackle Jason Peters out against the 49ers. To make room for Collins, they cut cornerback Trayvon Mullen. The Cowboys elevated cornerback Xavier Rhodes and offensive lineman Brock Hoffman for their Divisional Round contest.
