Derwin James Wins Prestigious Community Award
USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James is not just a star on the field, but off it as well. James was most recently awarded as the Community Athlete of the Year by the Los Angeles Sports Council.

"We are proud to celebrate Derwin James from the LA Chargers as Community Athlete of the Year at the upcoming LA Sports Awards! Congratulations, Derwin, and thank you for all you do on and off the field!" The Los Angeles Sports Council said in a statement.

James has partaken in numerous initiatives to benefit the community around him. The The three-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro joined the Chargers' Impact Fund to launch the Bolts Book Club summer reading program.

He also helped the fundraiser raise enough money to purchase school supplies for all the members. James has been involved with helping serve Thanksgiving to families in need, and also threw Derwin's Disco, a dance to provide some fun for a local senior community, via Chargers Communications.

James' work in his community has not only been recognized here. James has been the Chargers nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for the last two years. He was previously also the Chargers nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
