Michigan State football insider Jim Comparoni confirmed that there has been interest from both sides with Urban Meyer.

The Urban Meyer saga continues.

After weeks of speculation from Michigan State football fans and insiders, a report from Jim Comparoni, a trusted MSU source, spoke about the mutual interest between Urban and the Spartans. He spoke on this openly via his YouTube channel after the Minnesota game. Props to Justin Spiro for finding this clip because it’s very interesting.

Comp basically said that discussions have been ongoing and Meyer has wanted structuring in a potential contract. There has been a “return volley” by Meyer in these discussions which can only mean that there’s interest on both sides.

This means a number of things that have been speculated but never confirmed:

  1. Urban Meyer is interested in the job.
  2. Coaching again is not off the table for Meyer.
  3. Michigan State is interested.
  4. Representatives from both sides have met in person.
  5. A contract has been discussed.

It’s not hard to believe that Michigan State would be interested in one of the top three head coaches from the past couple of decades, but it’s intriguing to hear that Meyer has returned interest. For weeks, he has denied any interest in returning to coaching, but it seems like that’s not quite the case.

Michigan State fans need some good news after the past two months. The Spartans have lost six straight games and have the worst scoring offense in the Power Five this season, averaging just 18 points per game. The Spartans arguably should have beaten Rutgers, Iowa, and Minnesota, but poor coaching and execution have led to blown leads and disappointing defeats. The program needs someone like Meyer to turn things around.

Well, that may not be too far out, if Comparoni is correct here — and he usually is.
