Minnesota Vikings’ Insider Details JJ McCarthy’s Early Playing Time Chances

The Minnesota Vikings have welcomed a new quarterback into their ranks. Following the departure of Kirk Cousins, speculation swirled that the Vikings would target a QB in the draft—a forecast that materialized when they selected JJ McCarthy.

McCarthy’s draft position marks a historic high for quarterbacks in the franchise, signaling the organization’s optimism about his potential and tenure with the team.

Despite the significant investment made in him, there’s a prevailing notion that McCarthy won’t assume the role of Day 1 starter.

During a recent appearance on a local Minnesota radio show, Vikings reporter Ben Goessling shared his belief that McCarthy only holds a 10% chance of starting Week 1.

According to Goessling, “Kevin O’Connell does not want rookies on the field in this spot before they’re ready because I think he has a pretty strong belief that these guys are going to be better off with time to learn.”

While there have been instances of rookie quarterbacks excelling immediately in recent history, such occurrences are not the norm.

The 2023 season serves as a case in point.

The Houston Texans invested heavily in both funds and draft picks to bolster their roster, with the belief that securing a quarterback would catalyze significant progress. C.J. Stroud seamlessly integrated into their system, propelling the team from mediocrity in 2022 to playoff contention in 2023.

However, the success story wasn’t universal. Bryce Young, drafted one pick ahead of Stroud by the Carolina Panthers, didn’t experience a similar trajectory.

Teams like the Minnesota Vikings are attentive to the outcomes of rookie quarterbacks in previous seasons. If Goessling’s remarks hold true, it appears they may lean towards allowing JJ McCarthy additional time to acclimate before assuming a starting role.
