Mitchell Trubisky Says Re-Signing With Bills Was 'No-Brainer'

The Buffalo Bills are adjusting their passing situation.

Rest assured, Josh Allen will return, but the spot behind him is well-solidified as the team has re-added Mitchell Trubisky to its roster on a two-year deal. Trubisky, a brief Bill during the 2021 season, referred to his Western New York return as a "no-brainer" in video from NFL.com.

"Once I got released, there was like a few spots I had in my mind that I might've been interested in, and this was at the top of the list," Trubisky said. "To come back here, be a part of a contender, work with Josh and all the boys again, I was just really excited for the opportunity and I'm happy to be back."

Trubisky, 29, is the favorite to serve as Allen's understudy with Kyle Allen a free agent and Shane Buechele listed as the only other thrower on the roster. He fulfilled a similar role with the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last two seasons, amassing 1,884 yards with eight touchdown passes over 12 appearances.

Though Trubisky has struggled to live up to expectations placed upon him when the Chicago Bears drafted him second overall in 2017, he has appeared to have developed a niche as a veteran backup option.

While their competition hasn't been as blessed, the Bills have not had to worry about their backup quarterback spot in recent seasons. Trubisky previously made six garbage time appearances in relief of Allen during the 2021 season, completing 6-of-8 passes for 43 yards with one interception.

Despite his limited snaps, Bills general manager Brandon Beane publicly expressed his desire to see Trubisky stay when the team packed up after the year.

“For a guy that wants to play, I worried in-season if he was going to start getting the itch, like, ‘Man, I want to get out there,’" Beane said, per Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News. “Someone called us at the trade deadline asking about him … he was such a great fit for us, I couldn’t part with him knowing the team we had.”
