Report: Eagles might have to trade up to snag prospect with 'rare traits'

Only hours away from the 2023 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles, picking at No. 10 (and No. 30) in the first round, are uniquely positioned to add a difference-maker to their reigning NFC Championship squad. It's possible they may even be eyeing a bigger swing in Kansas City, though, with Ohio State left tackle Paris Johnson reportedly on their radar -- but perhaps requiring a trade-up.

According to James Palmer of NFL Network, general manager Howie Roseman has already called teams holding picks above Philly's No. 10 selection, gauging the price to move up, per Palmer.

Palmer noted that many within the NFL, including the Eagles, view the six-foot-six, 313-pounder as having "rare traits" for a tackle, adding that Johnson could start at right guard in Philly right away and still be the future at left tackle.

Despite having the No. 1 ranked offensive line in the NFL last season (according to Pro Football Focus), Philadelphia's reported interest in Johnson should not be surprising. The organization has routinely invested heavily in their line and it has paid dividends, helping the franchise to two Super Bowl berths since 2017.

Making a move to draft Johnson would also fit Roseman's M.O., as the Eagles GM has selected an offensive lineman with one of his first two picks in three of the last four drafts.

Nothing is ever certain on draft day and the Eagles' interest in Johnson could be always be a smoke screen, of course. Many view Philly's choice at No. 10 as a luxury pick, meaning they might go outside their comfort zone. The Eagles haven't selected a running back in the first round of the draft since 1986, but numerous draft pundits have linked star Bijan Robinson to Philly.

Roseman did not rule out the possibility of choosing a running back in the first round. And Palmer revealed on Wednesday that the Eagles planned to select Christian McCaffery had he fallen to No. 14 during the 2017 draft. Many believe Robinson could have a similar impact and it is possible that Roseman shifts gears and opts for the standout back if given the opportunity.
