Report: Jimmy Garoppolo to sign with Los Angeles Rams amid suspension
Mandatory Credit: Candice Ward-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams are set to sign former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. He is currently set to miss the first two games of the 2024 season due to a suspension related to performance-enhancing drugs.

Last year was Garoppolo’s only season with the Raiders, but he only appeared in seven games before suffering a back injury. He then found himself on the bench as Aidan O’Connell took over as the starter, and the franchise released him earlier this offseason.

The NFL suspended Garoppolo last month for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. At the time, Schefter said it was “said to be related to Garoppolo using a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption from the league, according to sources.”

After that news came out, Las Vegas granted Garoppolo his release. He signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders last offseason that also included $33 million in guarantees. His release came before the franchise owed him an $11.25 million roster bonus.

Now, Garoppolo is heading to Los Angeles to serve as a more than capable backup behind Matthew Stafford.

Jimmy Garoppolo started his career with the New England Patriots before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. He spent six seasons in the Bay, turning in his best season in 2019 when he threw for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns to lead San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance.

More on the 2024 NFL offseason, free agency

The NFL 2024 calendar year begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially run out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams will have a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams can enter into a legal negotiation with players who are set to become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marks the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marks the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hits. Following the restricted free agent deadline comes the 2024 NFL Draft, which runs from April 25-27.
